Thoughts on Star Trek
First I would like to say, Thank you Paramount, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. You didn't bastardize the reboot unlike a certain cable channel that will remain nameless. Sulu and Chekov weren't turn into babes like that other reboot I won't mention. The Enterprise looked like the Enterprise while that other once proud ship didn't.
Star Trek was true to the original series. Christopher Pike was the first captain of the USS Enterprise as was he in the original pilot 'The Cage'. Captain Pike returned for the two part episode 'The Menagerie'. He had been gruesomely burned by radiation and was bound to a wheelchair; Pike is seen in a wheelchair in the final scene of the movie, he's not severely hurt, just recovering from his injuries.
I got a little bit of a chuckle when Pike flew a shuttle to the Romulan ship; Kirk, Sulu, and a red 'shirt' make a secret drop to destroy the mining equipment and save Vulcan. Heh, guess who didn't make it! Alas, something else didn't either.
One could keep on writing on how many 'inside' jokes or references to the original series. One that many people may not be aware of is that the original script of 'Plato's Stepchildren', the episode that had the first inter-racial kiss, Spock was supposed to kiss Uhura. Someone's ego got in the way and Spock's superior kiss Uhura; however, in the movie Spock has his revenge.
I did and do plan on writing a Ryan Wolf spoof of the movie. I had planned on having my female Vulcan show her emotional side whenever she was with a certain charming, dashing, handsome lieutenant, er, I mean Captain. Imagine my shock when Spock and Uhura smooched away next to Kirk and the dismay of the studly Captain.
The good doctor, Bones, is still McCoy. It seemed like Karl Urban had channeled DeForest Kelly. Unfortunately we don't see a lot of Scotty, but when we do, he is a hoot! Lastly we have Kyle Reese, er, Chekov. Poor computer couldn't understand a lick of what he was saying!
Star Trek is back and will probably be better than ever. They now have a clean slate to start fresh, so Bones...Buckle up!
